“When the sun is out/ I’ve got something I can laugh about/ I feel good, in a special way/ I’m in love and it’s a sunny day.” The Beatles sung of Spring, reminding us how wonderful the weather change can make us feel. Our members are springing forth with a great assortment of new programming. Let’s take a look...

In celebration of Spring, we are programming a local music-heavy schedule. Thanks to Mike Cooper at Cooper’s Landing as well as Missouri River Cultural Conservancy, and CAT founding-father, Jeff Bassinson, we have a ton of new, local performances to show you. In addition, we are happy to bring you the back catalogue of other MoRivCC submissions and studio performances from CAT’s own, Notes from Underground.

Watch Bass Notes, by Jeff Bassinson, featuring Mere Mortals, Rarity and Bobby Showers Band, programmed randomly every night @ 10PM.

Find the new MoRivCC episodes featuring Dennis Ternamian & Anna Duff, Joshua Webster and Naked Dave (at The Bridge) scheduled in random order Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30PM.

See older episodes of MoRivCC at 3PM Mondays through Fridays.

Flexing Studio A Muscles

While we at Columbia Access Television try our best to make Studio A as easy to use as possible, any of our Studio Class Graduates can tell you that it still takes boatloads of effort and nerves of steel to put together a slick production. So when we see a group push the limits of Studio A, we like to share their work as an example of the possibilities at CAT.

Here's an example of that: http://youtu.be/iWvczz2OZaU

The ladies of the Advanced Studio Production class at Stephens College have been turning out a great weekly newscast covering current events around campus and in the community. All week long they gather B-roll, edit packages, write their scripts, and prepare every little detail away from the studio before they show up for their cablecast. It’s exactly this amount of preparation that makes for such a great show. It also doesn’t hurt having enough hands to cover every job necessary!

Video production is most definitely a collaborative exercise, requiring skilled collaborators and an immense amount of teamwork. Since the Advanced Studio Production class is utilizing every last bit of space in Studio A by shooting in three separate areas, cameras need to be moved frequently and those moves need to be coordinated with the talent, not to mention the director. Communication is key and these ladies are exemplary communicators.

All of that’s well and good, but what should you take away from this? First, do your homework. Productions don’t come together with a few minutes of haphazard graphics assembly, they take hours of work beforehand and strict organization of those prepared assets before anyone sets foot in the studio. You should do that, too.

CAT's DSLR kits rolling out soon

After a healthy period of trial-and-error, CAT is proud to introduce two high-definition field kits featuring a Canon T4i and a brand new bag full of filmmaking goodies. The DSLR format has become the de facto acquisition format for no-budget independent films because of its filmic depth-of-field, and ease of use. This kit is pretty exciting and is chock full of extremely useful tech, but I'll give you just the highlights:

  • a Canon T4i, the newest in the series featuring continuous auto-focus on innovative STM Canon lenses
  • a Tascam DR-40 to record fantastic sound in MP3 and WAV formats in a plethora of bit- and sample-rates
  • an external 5" monitor to watch your scene in tight corners or with a group

With new gear comes new training, so starting after the holidays we'll be offering a class dedicated to the Canon T4i kit. We're still setting the schedule for these classes, so check back with your friendly neighborhood Justin Gregory after the start of the new year.

While you're waiting with bated breath to get your hands on HD field equipment, take a look at this little camera test I shot earlier in the fall. Be sure to watch it in HD for full effect: http://youtu.be/Y4XV6_bv5cQ
